The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched an urgent and coordinated response following a devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which has resulted in multiple fatalities, displaced hundreds of residents, and destroyed critical infrastructure.
While the full impact of the disaster is still unfolding, authorities have pledged continued support until the emergency is fully managed.
In an official statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, “The Federal Government’s top priority is to save lives and provide immediate relief to flood victims,” he stated.conveyed the government’s deep sorrow over the tragedy. He confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fully briefed and has directed emergency and security agencies to intensify search and rescue efforts across affected communities.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces and Niger State Government, has deployed rapid response teams to deliver aid and evacuate affected residents. Authorities are working round-the-clock to locate missing persons and restore essential services.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in bringing urgent assistance to those impacted,” Idris emphasized.
Residents in flood-affected areas have been urged to fully cooperate with emergency personnel and adhere to all evacuation orders and safety protocols to prevent further loss of life.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and everyone affected by this unfortunate disaster,” the minister added. The flood, which struck on Thursday, May 29, has overwhelmed local infrastructure, submerged homes, and severely impacted livelihoods in Mokwa and surrounding communities.
Search, rescue, and relief efforts are actively underway, with the federal government promising unwavering support until normalcy is restored.
