The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has officially launched a state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Centre in Kano, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s national strategy to combat rising global cyber threats and secure its digital economy.
Located at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), the new cybersecurity hub is equipped with cutting-edge technology and is designed to address critical issues such as digital theft, data breaches, and cyber threats. The Centre will also support cybersecurity research, capacity building, hands-on training, and national security efforts.
During the official commissioning ceremony, NITDA Director General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, represented by Dr. Jide Ajayi, Director of the Zonal Coordinating Department, described the initiative as a strategic national investment. He emphasized that the Centre is part of a knowledge-driven approach to equip Nigeria with the talent, infrastructure, and tools necessary to fortify its digital space.
“This Cybersecurity Centre represents our commitment to building trust in Nigeria’s growing digital economy,” Abdullahi stated. “As we embrace rapid digital transformation, it is crucial to proactively address increasing risks related to cyberattacks, data breaches, and digital vulnerabilities.”
He further noted that the Centre aligns with the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda and the Minister’s Strategic Blueprint, serving as a platform for innovation, collaboration, and cybersecurity education.
The Centre is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between the government, academia, and private sector, enhancing national preparedness and response to cybersecurity threats. It will act as a hub for research and practical training, empowering students, researchers, and professionals with critical cybersecurity skills.
Professor Adamu Sagir, Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, expressed gratitude to NITDA for choosing BUK as the Centre’s location. He noted that the facility would significantly support newly introduced cybersecurity academic programs, positioning the university as a leader in cybersecurity education in West Africa.
With the establishment of the NITDA Cybersecurity Centre in Kano, Nigeria reinforces its commitment to building a resilient digital future by investing in innovation, talent development, and cross-sector partnerships.
